Giant Pumpkin At Washington County Fair Breaks Oklahoma State Record

The biggest pumpkin in Oklahoma history is at the Washington County Fair this weekend. The grower is from Elk City, Oklahoma, and says it weighs over 1,000 pounds.

"It's kind of difficult to grow a giant pumpkin," says Amber Harrison.

Harrison is known as the Pumpkin Mom on Facebook, and she just grew the largest pumpkin on record in Oklahoma.

"Having a giant pumpkin is like having a newborn child, a newborn baby. It's … every day and you go and look at it two or three times," said Harrison.

Her 1,097-pound baby beat out the former record by over 200 pounds. It's no surprise she's in the Oklahoma Giant Pumpkin Growers Club.

To get an official weight for her pumpkin, Amber loaded it up and drove four hours to the Washington County fair where folks can get a look at a new state record.

Kids are left in awe when they see the almost fake-looking pumpkin. Superintendent of Horticulture Rayln Boudreaux assures them it's real.

"It's hard to grow a pumpkin this size, it takes a lot of work and a lot of attention. Most of the time it fails, so it's a reward to see somebody grow one this big, bring it here," said Boudreaux.

This is only Amber's third attempt at growing a giant pumpkin and admits she didn’t expect it to get this big.

"If they're putting on 20 or 30 pounds a day, the vines can shift and you can get a kink in it right away or you could have like a watering problem. If your line is busted and it waters too much, then your pumpkin could bust," says Amber.

She says this pumpkin grew for nearly three months before she picked it.

"Expect a marathon, it's not a sprint," Amber said.

If it's still in good shape, this record-breaking pumpkin will be shipped to Claremore to go on display next weekend.
