Two Ponca City high school sweethearts are spending their first Christmas together as an engaged couple after a proposal they'll never forget.
Tyler Jackson says he wanted to surprise his longtime girlfriend, Maddie Newcomb with a proposal on the field at Boone Pickens Stadium during the OSU Homecoming game and it was even caught on camera.
“I had the idea but I thought to myself there’s no way we were going to make that happen,” said Tyler Jackson.
Tyler says this wasn’t his original idea for the proposal but after Maddie figured out the first plan, he had to come up with something new. So Maddie’s dad helped him make a few calls and the plan was set. Maddie and Tyler started off the game day by entering a giveaway for $5,000 and when the OSU athletic director came to them and said they were the fans of the game, Maddie thought they won.
“All the way down to the field I told him we won the money,” said Maddie Newcomb.
But Tyler knew the real reason they were heading onto the field.
“She almost ruined it and said what if you had my ring right now and proposed. I said uh-huh,” said Tyler.
Maddie says she knew the proposal was coming since they’ve been dating for five years, she just didn’t know when. Tyler tried to cover up the plan by telling her he didn't have the ring yet but when they got down to the field he dropped to one knee.
“I don’t know what I expected my day to look like but whatever it was exceeded times a million,” said Maddie. "I always imagined when I got engaged that I would cry but to hear the whole stadium kind of be in support of us and rally behind us was probably the best feeling that I've ever felt before.”
Tyler and Maddie might’ve thought their time on the big screen came to an end after their proposal here in Stillwater, but then they made the Jumbotron during the Big 12 championship game in Dallas.
“It was so awesome just to be on there again and if you zoom in closely Tyler threw up the go pokes sign,” said Maddie, but Tyler quickly added, “well once but it will never happen again.”
Maddie graduated from OSU in May with a Psychology degree and is heading back to get her master's.
She bleeds orange but Tyler.... not so much.
“Don’t get me wrong I’ll cheer for an Oklahoma team and I’ll root for OSU but as soon as OSU and OU play I gotta stay true to my team,” said Tyler.
...as for who their future kids will cheer for someday?
“Sooners,” said Tyler.
“That’s not what I told him,” said Maddie. “I told him they would wear orange”
