Tulsa Non-Profit Helps Adults With Special Needs Find Work

Adults with special needs in Green Country are getting the chance to work and make money thanks to one Tulsa non-profit organization.

A New Leaf is opening its pop-up shops, which sell plants, for the spring season. Krista Pine has been gardening for four years. She says she's thankful for A New Leaf for this opportunity.

"It's a great non-profit organization that helps disabled adults get jobs,” said Pine.

Workers like Krista water the plants and help customers. Lindsey Stewart, the Manager of Philanthropic Resources for A New Leaf, says this program benefits both these adults and the people who shop there.

"They earn a wage, they're here helping tend to the flowers, so anything you buy from us has been touched, tended to, and probably loaded into your car by A New Leaf client," said Stewart.

Stewart says because of these shops, adults with special needs can become more independent.

"People with developmental disabilities want what everyone else in the community wants,” said Stewart. “They want an opportunity to work, live on their own, and be independent people. So we at A New Leaf believe that removing those barriers to employment, to independent living, is so important."

Stewart says working at the pop-up shop has been great for clients like Krista.

"The clients that work here at the pop-up, Krista's actually been promoted, so this is a really coveted position,” said Stewart. “She has worked her way up from working in the greenhouse with a group, now she's here independently with her job coach/sales associate, and so she's really worked hard to be here."

Pine says one of the best parts about working in the shop is helping the people who come in.

"Just come buy plants and it's a great place to work, and it's a great place to buy plants from,” said Pine.

The pop-up shops are open seven days a week this spring in South Tulsa, Owasso, Jenks, and Broken Arrow. The shops are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
