Sooners Top Wichita State 8-1In Norman

Oklahoma baseball dominated all three phases of the game and earned the 8-1 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

The Sooners were first and last on the board, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly in the first and closing the contest with a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.

"Jackson [Nicklaus] and [John] Spikerman looked like they saw the ball better tonight and Bryce [Madron] really saw it well," said Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson. "He continues to go forward and hopefully the other two guys will get rolling and we can play a little bit more on offense."

In the first inning, junior right fielder Bryce Madron scored from third on a sacrifice fly by redshirt junior left fielder Kendall Pettis.

The Shockers evened the tally with a one-out solo home run in the fourth, but it did not last long.

The Sooner offense exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Madron was the first baserunner of the inning after he was hit by a pitch. He quickly advanced to second on a throwing error by the Wichita State pitcher and scored after Pettis laced a single through the left side, recording his second RBI of the outing. Freshman first baseman Rocco Garza-Gongora singled to center in the next at bat and put runners on first and third with no outs. The duo of Pettis and Garza-Gongora each advanced a base on a passed ball, allowing Pettis to score.

With one out, the Sooners again had runners on the corners and a Shocker pitching change produced the second out of the inning. Sophomore third baseman Wallace Clark sliced a two-RBI triple down the right field line to produce the four-run total.

Oklahoma added an additional run in the fifth. Pettis continued his tear at the plate and produced his first triple of the season. In scoring position, Pettis raced home on a RBI single bunt by sophomore center fielder John Spikerman, who perfectly positioned the bunt down the left side of the infield.

With the Sooner pitching staff managing the Wichita State offense, Oklahoma again went on the attack in the eighth. OU had runners on first and second with one out after back-to-back walks. Junior shortstop Anthony Mackenzie pushed the first run across on a single to right center, scoring Clark. Down to their last out of the inning, the Sooners netted their second run on a single by Madron to left center.

Gray Harrison earned the start and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. Reliever Carson Atwood was first out of the pen and tallied a team-high three strikeouts through 1.1 innings of work. Carter Campell earned the victory (4-3) and tallied two scoreless innings. Kale Davis tallied a scoreless seventh and Jett Lodes pitched the final two innings.

Madron, Pettis and Spikerman finished 2 for 3 at the plate. Pettis and Clark tallied a team-high two RBI. Freshman second baseman Jackson Nicklaus recorded three walks.
