The Osage Nation is congratulating Lily Gladstone after her historic win at the Golden Globes. The actress played Molly Burkhart in "Killers of the Flower Moon," which was filmed in Oklahoma.
Gladstone is the first Native American woman to win a Golden Globe for best actress.
As Gladstone took the stage, her first words were spoken in the Blackfeet language, the nation and community she credits with raising her.
“I love everyone in this room right now, thank you,” she said.
"I think that Lily is the best representation for exactly this moment. That's why it is so incredibly huge. And she couldn't be more gracious, more humble, truly. And more appreciative of really telling this and being our champion for this,” Julie O’Keefe said.
O'Keefe worked as the Lead Osage Wardrobe Consultant, working with Gladstone every day on her costumes for the movie.
"Our unspoken agreement was I'm coming in here so that you walk out that door with confidence,” O’Keefe said. “That you look exactly the way you should and you're ready for whatever scene is coming up."
From Hollywood to Pawhuska, the cheering echoed across more than a thousand miles, at a watch party hosted by Osage News.
"We all knew we would be happy, we didn't know we would be crying,” Osage News Editor Shannon Shaw Duty said.
Shaw Duty was in the crowd Sunday night in Pawhuska and called the win “monumental.” She looks back at when Gladstone first accepted the role.
"She said she was going to take this character into her arms into a loving embrace and love her, and she did."
Going forward, everyone is looking ahead to the Oscars.
"This moment is historic,” O’Keefe said. “Last night made history. So if nothing else were to happen, last night was history-making."
