Oklahoma Storms: NWS Rates Cordell Tornado An EF1

A tornado that caused damage Tuesday in Cordell was rated an EF-1, according to the National Weather Service.

In a Public Information Statement issued Wednesday, the NWS said the tornado had a path of 2.5 miles with estimated winds of between 105-110 mph.

Just days after an outbreak of tornadoes across the state, Oklahomans faced another evening of tornadoes, which caused damage in multiple locations, including the town of Cordell.

Storms began to fire up Tuesday afternoon, and the state had its first tornado around 5:30 p.m.

Our trackers were following the storm when the tornado was on the ground, which led to the National Weather Service issuing a warning for the local area a few minutes later.

A homeowner from Cordell spoke with Chief Meteorologist David Payne about her experience with the tornado and the damage left behind.

Southwest Oklahoma became the bullseye for tornadoes, with five preliminary tornadoes at Cordell, Roosevelt, southwest of Apache, Frederick and east of Hollister.

Hollister may end up rated as a violent tornado, but that's not official yet.

With mile-wide debris, radar-estimated wind speeds up to 200 mph at 450 feet off the ground, we will be likely find some damage down there on Wednesday. Our trackers searched for damage on Tuesday, but many roads were impassable either due to downed power lines or flood waters.

Another highlight of Tuesday's severe weather was the amount and size of hail received. Near Canton, nearly 4" diameter hail and plenty of tennis ball-sized hail near Lone Wolf and other areas of southwestern Oklahoma.

More hail rained down in northern Oklahoma near Medford and other towns nearby. 

Cordell Schools shared that classes will be canceled on Wednesday.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter for residents affected by a tornado in Cordell.
