Edmond Native Daryl Dike Continues To Shine In European Soccer

An English soccer club is making waves across the pond thanks in large part to an Edmond native.

Twenty-year-old Barnsley forward Daryl Dike, who is currently on loan from Major League Soccer's Orlando City SC, scored the match-winning goal Wednesday in the club's 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town. The goal is Dike's ninth since arriving in Barnsley earlier this calendar year.

Of course, Dike is no stranger to the attention. He also stars alongside Christian Pulisic on the U.S. Men's National Team, but here's why Dike's recent stretch of success is significant for Barnsley.

Barnsley currently competes in the English Football League Championship, which is a notch in prestige below the famed English Premier League.

Each season, the top two EFL finishers move up to the EPL while the EFL's third through sixth-place finishers face off in a winner-take-all tournament for the right to compete in the Premier League next season.

Barnsley has won 12 matches, lost two and drew one since Dike arrived. If the club holds onto its current sixth-place standing in the EFL, it could have a shot at capturing EFL's third and final Premier League slot.

Another big 'if': If Dike continues to impress in England, his days as a MLSer could be numbered.
